Our Mission Statement
‘Ahmad was an inspiring figure, in his work and his life. There could hardly be a better model to try to follow, as best we can.’ - Noam Chomsky
Eqbal Ahmad was a bold, committed, and original public intellectual. His early life in India and experiences during Partition led him to become a lifelong revolutionary present at the heart of many defining political moments of the second half of the 20th Century. His incisive analyses of empire, the post-colonial state, the contemporary Arab-Islamic world, Middle East and South Asian politics, and multiple forms of popular resistance, continue to illuminate the crises roiling our planet today. A critical friend to marginalized communities and movements for justice, emancipation, and peace, Eqbal Ahmad opened minds and inspired change as a teacher, scholar, activist, thinker, and radical. The Eqbal Ahmad Project seeks to promote and explore his body of work and archives, to popularize his values and approach to life, to share his deeply prescient insights and warnings, and to secure his legacy for all humanity. Towards these ends, we work to engage constituencies organically linked to his values, to recognize persons and groups who embody his values in their work, and to build and sustain a community that empowers individuals and movements to learn, act and make change.
