Our Story

This Project was established firstly as a Facebook Fan Page by the First Admin, in 2008 as a tribute to the public intellectual Eqbal Ahmad.

Building on the work of the First Admin, Second and current Admin Siraj Ali, who took over in 2012, evolved and extended the scope of the page to:

…The page is an informal place for Eqbal’s followers, page friends new and old, to explore and share his work and legacy. Inspired by the latter and page friends, we aim to bring an eclectic theme-based interplay with Eqbal’s lifetimes work in current times. This leads onto project collaborations with individuals & groups…

…Essentially a project that deals with Eqbal Ahmad’s work and legacy at the ideas and intellectual level. A big part of the page’s identity and exploration has been collaborations, importantly taking the electronic into the world…

We began looking ahead and in 2018 an initial page development consultation was commenced. Then with the advent of the Pandemic in early 2020 we commenced a second phase of consultation.

As a result we renamed and became The Eqbal Ahmad Project in February 2021. Our new name was endorsed by Eqbal Ahmad’s family.

We formally announced this important milestone as follows:

“We are excited to announce our new name ‘The Eqbal Ahmad Project’. Our previous designation of Fan Page served us well. But as we move forward with some exciting ideas, we wanted a name that conveys:

• Eqbal Ahmad’s Stature as a Public Intellectual, His Work, Career and Legacy

• Our ethos and approach, building on previous Fan Page work and initiatives, in our continued exploration of Eqbal Ahmad’s life and insights. Crucially with more voices, more collaborations, and greater interactions around the world with you!

We then convened a series of sessions over 2021 and 2022 with a lead development community, individuals who have supported and worked with the Fan Page and the Project over the years. Thanks to their collective efforts and encouragement we sketched out a long term vision and after much discussion established The Eqbal Ahmad Project Mission Statement in July 2022.
